We’re back (again)

After months and months (or could it have been years) of procrastination and a fair amount of hard work our brand new website is finally online.

Along with the new website comes our brand new, more diversified line of boards. The perfect starting point for any custom surfboard anyone might need or want. We’ve put a lot of emphasis on giving customers as much information about our design and process as possible. If you need to know it – it’s here. If it’s not – feel free to give us a call, drop a line or submit a question via our FAQs.

Let us know, what you think. We appreciate any kind of feedback.

Promises, Promises!

Considering the timespan it took to get this done, we really shouldn’t talk about what we have planned next. But still: stay on the lookout for our webshop, rider profiles, some video-enhancements and more good stuff. Just don’t hold your breath.

PS
Thanks to the guys at Surfguiding Peniche for all the help and  Andreas Weiss for shitloads of great pics.

FCS Fusion™

At Fatum we have made the switch! Now our main fin system is FCS FUSION™. This happened for a number of reasons:

1. Strength. Fusion is the strongest pre glass system on the market. This was achieved by incorporating a double parabolic outline. (read: unique peanut shape) which offers constant curves that prevent the straight line shearing that fiberglass is prone to. We also incorporated a high density foam foundation. This is a patented installation feature that creates a material gradient using a bonded high density foam underneath the system to dramatically increase the impact resistance and break strength while keeping the board light and lively.

2. Performance lateral pressure. Because the fins are held in place by two screws that push against the base of the fin, base flex is greatly reduced. The fins feel much more rigid at the base and allow the direct transfer of power from your feet into your turns.

3. A shorter footprint to allow more natural tail flex in the board giving it a livelier more responsive feel.

4. Reduced Weight. Fusion is the lightest pre glass fin system available.

5. Adjustability: We wanted to offer some forward adjustability for people who wanted to fine-tune their board’s performance by moving their fins.

6. Accuracy: Gero feels it is very important to see the shapers dots as they tell you at a glance that the fin system has been installed accurately. While all other box systems require removal of the shapers dots, fusion does not. We know that a quarter inch difference in fin placement can make a big difference on how your board performs. FCS gives you that quality assurance at glance without complicated measuring.

Accuracy includes cant angles as well. Because fusion has different cant angles built into the system it’s easier to install for the manufacturer because it matches the contour of the bottom of the board better. This allows for a better stronger installation with truer fin cant angles every time.

7. Also FCS has the most diverse fin collection in the market, allowing us to provide our clients with the best, most specific, reliable and appropriate fins for our wide range of board models and surf conditions. This allows our clients to get the best of their board, turn after turn and wave after wave,

However, you can still order your board with Future™ and Lokbox™ fin systems, we have those available, and also we can provide you with fins and technical expertise for both these systems.

Damien Wills

If you are not acquainted with the man also known as “Dom”, Damien Wills is an Australian who happened to cruise Portugal in search of good waves. When Dom came in contact with Fatum Surfboards he was surfing in the Peniche vicinity, having as his one and only board a tuflite-like surfboard (he had broken all his other boards during travel). Gero offered him a board for him to try out. We were really amazed by his power surfing, one of the best styles, power and manoeuvre repertoire ever seen around here. No wonder he was 3rd at last year’s (2008) Air Tahiti Nui Von Zipper Teahupoo Trials.

MacMasters Beach, where Dom grew up was a good place to learn what he does.
Great videographer and editor for years, his huge surf potential was only recently discovered.
For Dom it’s not about fame and glory. Very modest freesurfer. He never pushed or tried to be noticed. It just happened. He became fully sponsored in 2008 and now travels the world as a pro surfer. Living his childhood dream.
Damien was one of the main surfers in “Eastside Theory”, as well as the brave water videographer.
“Explosive array of big airs, sick flips and commando pits” are only some of his tricks in the water. Spearfishing is his other hobby. When not in the ocean or glued to his MacBook Pro, he would show some impressive snowboarding skills or attend craziest parties you can imagine (no surprise, when you line up next to him and notice his toenails polished bright pink from last night)!

FATUM HAD KELLY'S PIPE WINNING BOARD ALREADY IN HIS QUIVER LINE UP!

Kelly Slater just won the prestigious PIPEMASTERS on a very unique surfboard. It was very funny when we realised that the shape of that surfboard was already tested, implemented and available at Gero’s portfolio of shapes.

This once again shows the high performance, knowledge and progression of Gero’s shapes by launching several months ago the same shape use now by Kelly to win the PIPEMASTERS.

So one this is for sure, Fatum Surfboards is right on track!

Fancied it? Just use our order form then!

PRETOMA

At Fatum we are aware that the surfing industry as it stand is far from being environmental friendly; so we try to balance this by creating infra-structures and develop activities in order to conserve, protect and care about nature.
We have some policies and new materials that will be implemented and installed at the factory to achieve a high sustainability of processing and manufacturing surfboards, besides this, we also support and take part of organizations whom efforts are pivotal in the world we live in.

PRETOMA is such an example. Via Thomas Lange Fatum is collaborating with this Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in order to protect our oceans.

PRETOMA is a Costa Rican non-profit NGO founded in 1997. It is a marine conservation and research organization working to protect ocean resources and promote sustainable fisheries policies in Costa Rica and Central America.
Marine conservation is in Costa Rica very far behind land conservation here, and furthermore, many of the positive laws and regulations that do exist go unenforced.

PRETOMA directs their efforts in the following categories:

1. Direct in the field conservation projects
2. Research and outreach onboard commercial fishing vessels
3. Public awareness and education
4. Litigation and policy advocacy
